The barking trees are a grove located within Newman's Dale. At one time the area was home to several steadtree hermits, each located just within ear shot of the others. They differed in theological school, and would often call out to one another arguing, lending the grove its name. It is strongly suspected that Greenleaf, one of the instigators of the War of Dissolution for the Pious Dissolutionists, lived here for a time, which may explain his blunt condemnation of the High Hearthkeeper.
